New Survey from Zulily Shows Moms Are Planning For A ‘Shelter in Place Sequel’ This Fall

Data reveals that despite a lift of COVID-19 lockdowns, moms are prepping for more time at home, using back-to-school shopping to budget carefully, stockpile snacks and reboot kids’ home workspaces

According to a new survey1 by online retailer Zulily, moms say their biggest concern this back-to-school season is public health (46 percent), and the balancing act between work, parenting, and managing online learning for the kids (21 percent). While these concerns are undoubtedly a result of the pandemic, the study shows that moms now also have a newfound focus on shopping to save and planning for the unknown.

“Back-to-school shopping season is an annual event moms and kids look forward to, but this year that tradition has changed significantly,” said Lindsay Reynolds, a Zulily family shopping and trend expert. “Our new data shows that moms have a very clear idea of what fall will look like, and they’re already making plans to ensure their kids are safe, comfortable, and successful while potentially still learning from home. This year, back-to-school is a first for moms and kids alike. At Zulily, we can help them prepare and celebrate their first day in new way. Top findings and trends from the survey include:

  • Planning Ahead for the Unknown: Families have one advantage this fall that they didn’t have in the spring: time. Parents are using the time they have now to plan for a “worst case scenario” fall.

    • 63 percent of moms say it’s at least somewhat important to plan ahead for back-to-school shopping this season, with 42 percent reporting that planning ahead will help them save.
    • 54 percent of moms expect to shop online more this back-to-school season than they did last year due to public health concerns.
  • Navigating Economic Pressures: This year’s back-to-school season comes at a time when many families across the country face job loss or uncertainty—making budget a top priority.

    • 72 percent of moms surveyed said budget will be at least somewhat important in their back-to-school shopping this year and nearly 30 percent said they are more concerned with budget this year when compared with last year.
  • Snack Stockpiling: With kids (and parents) home all day, they have unlimited access to the pantry. Grocery shopping has become a bigger worry for moms in recent months, and they’re looking for snacks that will keep satisfying the whole family, can be bought in bulk, and are easy for kids to eat while parents are working.

    • 55 percent of moms say their kids are snacking more while learning from home, and 48 percent of moms are at least somewhat concerned about keeping the snacks stocked.
    • Zulily data shows purchases of nuts, fruit, and popcorn are on the rise, with purchases for pantry staples such as condiments, which include mustards, specialty dips, and nut butters, growing by more than 300 percent year over year in March through June. In addition, cooking/baking mixes are up more than 200 percent year over year in March through June, signaling families are making their own snacks these days.
  • Seeking Solace & Structure at Home: Moms have adjusted to virtual learning schedules, and while the process hasn’t been easy, they have identified a way to make it feel more routine by adding organization into their kids’ learning space to increase productivity and comfort.

    • 73 percent of moms say their kids have designated workspaces at home, with 23 percent of moms saying they’d like to improve this space by making it more organized and exciting.
    • Zulily shopping trends are backing this trend up, with purchases for storage and desk organization up by more than 25 percent year over year in March through June.
    • Starting July 8, Zulily will provide mom helpful online materials to gear up for what will be a first day of school in a whole new way– including fun #FirstDayNewWay printable signs, back-to-school advice and shareable Instagram animated gif stickers.
  • New Normal = New Family Traditions: With parents looking to keep kids active and entertained, new traditions have started to take shape that offer families a way to spend more time together—and the backyard and kitchen are center stage. These new traditions give kids a new kind of “hands on” learning experience.

    • Forty-one percent of moms say that they’ve implemented new traditions as a result of remote learning.
    • Time outdoors (29 percent) and developing new skills in the kitchen (22 percent) rank as the top new traditions for families.
    • Zulily has seen more than 20 percent growth in kitchen purchases year over year in March through June.

  • 84 percent say that they frequently worry about their pet(s) when they’re apart for short stints, such as when running errands.
  • 71 percent of millennial pet owners would take a pay cut if it meant they could bring their pet(s) to work with them every day – and, more than 1 in 5 (21 percent) would sacrifice a whopping 20 percent or more of their pay to make every day “bring your pet to work day."
  • 44 percent even confess to having “fibbed" about their pet(s) specifically to stay home from work.

Proud Owners Love to Pamper Pets (and Themselves)

  • Lucky dog! More than half (51 percent) of millennial pet owners buy gifts for their pet(s) once a month or more, and do so four times per month, on average.
  • 83 percent are showing their pride by purchasing cat or dog related merchandise, from clothing and wall art to mugs and welcome mats to show they are a proud pet parent.

Her tough love in AVID teaches the organization skills children desperately need for success in life. She's a great communicator with the parents and an important part of foster children's "village" who raised them. She's the reason we don't shy away from fostering middle school aged kiddos! Jeffrey Gross, Special Education, Edison High School, Philadelphia, PA. Jeff’s music therapy program is the impossible in a Philadelphia class for multiple handicapped students. With no budget, he has brought in music therapy students to work in his class twice weekly and not surprisingly there have been amazing results from the once silent students. He has also found a way to bring in alpacas from the surrounding area, definitely a first for his students! He just keeps talking to people he meets and keeps looking for resources to bring into school for his "kids." His calm attitude is not the usual in the school but cannot be replaced. – Jessica Levin

Iyana Tennon, Elementary, all subjects, Virtuous Academy, Duquesne, PA. Iyana runs a beautiful and thoughtful school for kids who attend a really tough district. Many kids drop out and the others that remain are often bullied and underperforming. Iyana created Virtuous Academy to provide a safe option for these kids, with a strong academic curriculum. STEM is a large part of it, as she believes jobs in the sciences are a way for these young people to break the cycle of poverty in their families. – Gisele Fetterman

  • Girls go against gender norms, while embracing the combination of comfort and style, with their top styles being athletic (40%), followed by boho (33%)
  • Boys on the other hand are looking to a more adult-influenced approach for fashion inspiration, preferring city chic (48%) and preppy (33%) styles for their back-to-school wardrobe

Blue Ranks #1 Among Kids, Girls Prefer Traditional Favorites

  • The classic, yet cool color of blue is the top color among all kids (26%)
  • However, girls still like the more traditional colors for girls with pink (29%) and purple (25%) reigning supreme as their favorite colors of choice, with blue coming in third (15%)
  • Boys still prefer blue (42%), with red (15%) and black (12%) coming in as second and third choices

Sorry Mom: Girls’ Say Mom Isn’t Her #1 Style Icon

  • While many moms use their own style as the main source of inspiration when shopping for their kids (38%), girls are in fact, more likely to turn to their friends (41%) first for inspiration, then to their mom (26%) followed closely by television (22%)
  • Boys continue to go with the flow and frequently turn to parents for style inspiration first (38%), followed closely by friends (34%), with television being the smallest source of their style inspiration (14%)

How Moms Beat the Wardrobe Wars

  • Style inspiration isn’t the only thing moms and daughters may not see eye to eye on. When it comes to picking out what to wear, girls are more independent, with 36 percent of moms admitting to disagreeing on clothing choices with their daughters
  • To beat the wardrobe wars, a majority of moms (58%) recommend giving their child choices and letting the child ultimately pick their own outfit.

“The best way to unleash your child’s style is by giving kids a number of choices," said Redman. “As they get older, give them the chance to express their independence and individuality when picking their outfits, as this will ultimately lead to feelings of self-confidence, gaining self-style and learning how to coordinate different pieces."

While back-to-school shopping can be daunting, Redman recommends planning in advance and getting an early start to avoid any stress.

“Start by cleaning out your kid’s closet so you can see what still fits and be able to accurately put together a checklist of what you need for this year," said Redman. “Create a budget and look for the best deals to help stay within that budget."

National Survey Breaks Down Average Back-to-School Spend, When Parents Plan to Shop, Fall Trends and More

Seattle, WA – July 16, 2014 – While the back-to-school season signals excitement over a new classroom and a fresh wardrobe for most kids, for many parents it means stress around shopping budgets, a change in schedules and managing homework after the long summer break. zulily, a retailer focused on all things for moms and women, today announced findings from a survey showing that the cost of back-to-school shopping ranks highest on the list of stresses for parents tied to the new school year, coming in as the number one stress for more than one in two families (52%). read more

“Getting kids ready for a new school year is a time of transition for most families, from reestablishing a solid routine to fighting the battle over what kids want to wear each morning," said Amy E. Goodman, lifestyle editor at zulily.com and an expert on everything for home and fashion. “One of my biggest pieces of advice is to make a plan and stick to it: from bedtime routines, to getting outfits ready the night before, to figuring out how to organize all those forms, being prepared will keep both parents and kids happy."

zulily surveyed more than 6,000 parents on their thoughts about the back-to-school time period and found that over one-third (34%) say they are always on the lookout and shopping for the new school year, while the remainder start their shopping in July (24%) or August (26%).

Back to School Stressors:

The cost to refill kids’ closets and backpacks prior to the new school year was the biggest stress reported by just over one in two parents, with getting kids ready and out the door in the morning following right behind. When asked to choose their top three stresses about their kids going back to school, parents reported:

  • Cost of back to school shopping (clothing, accessories, supplies) – 52%
  • Getting kids up and ready in the morning – 51%
  • Getting a good teacher – 43%
  • Homework – 33%
  • Bedtime – 30%
  • Making lunches – 26%
  • Transportation/getting kids to school on time – 25%
  • Clothing/what to wear – 25%

School Spending: Breaking down the Budget

Further breaking down the cost to send each child into their new classroom, findings showed the vast majority of parents (70%) spend between $50 to $250 per child on clothing. More than seven in 10 (72%) plan to keep their shoe budget under $100 per child and half of parents (52%) try to keep spending on school supplies under $50.

In addition, one quarter of parents (26%) said they plan to spend more on their back-to-school shopping this year than in years past, while 14% will spend less and 60% plan to spend about the same amount. More than half of parents (54%) admitted to picking up clothes to refresh their own wardrobe while shopping for new school clothes for their kids. < p>

“While the cost of shopping can be stressful for parents, back-to-school shopping should be fun for everyone involved," continued Goodman. “From colorful camo to galaxy inspired designs, there are plenty of fun prints and patterns on trend for fall shopping."

Who Wears it Best?

Digging deeper into the minds of moms, zulily recently ran a Facebook poll to find out if moms are buying more for themselves or for their kids. The findings were a bit surprising:


  • 85 percent of mothers say they spent more on their kids' clothes in the past year than they did on their own wardrobe
  • 84 percent of moms said their children sport a more stylish wardrobe than they do
  • More than half of moms admit to sneaking a purchase in for themselves while shopping for their kids

"Moms have a selfless nature when it comes to their kids and their wardrobe is no exception," said Lori Twomey, Chief Merchant at zulily. "But that doesn't mean that moms are totally giving up on their own personal shopping needs. While moms in the survey may think they spend more on their kids' clothes than on their own, we actually see the majority of our sales coming from our women and home categories."

Based on average shopping cart spend and frequency of purchase in an average month, here are the top 10 cities for kids fashion and some of the popular trends zulily is seeing in each region.


  1. New Yorkers look great in the popular puffy coat. With the bitter winter, it's no surprise.
  2. Miami kids are all about swimsuits. Rash guards and short are popular trends for boys while girls sport tankinis in bright prints.
  3. Houston girls stay chic with daisy floral printed dresses. Houston moms can also sport a similar floral numbers themselves.
  4. Dallas is all about denim. Maybe it's the cowboy at heart but from chambray, to jeans and overalls, but Dallas kids rock the trend.
  5. Atlanta kids sport the printed t-shirt, expressing their personality through their tees, with funny images, words, and logos.
  6. Tampa kids know how to accessorize with flair to go with their outfits, like watches, headbands, bracelets, and necklaces.
  7. Chicago keeps warm from the windy city with hoodies for kids.
  8. San Francisco makes flats fun. San Franciscans – both moms and their kiddos – are sporting flats all over town, whether its boots, sandals or sneakers, consider it a "no heels zone."
  9. Cleveland rocks with darker and edgier clothes with rocker, music themed wear, decked out with jewels, studs and sequins.
  10. San Diego has painted its town plaid, sporting this look in shorts, shirts and dresses.
